The Royal Cornwall Show

The Royal Cornwall Show is set to return this year after the Covid pandemic meant the 2021 event had to be cancelled for two years running.

The event is one of the biggest in the South West and a focal point in Cornwall’s agricultural calendar.

The event is organised by the Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association. Its secretary, Chris Riddle, said: “Once again in 2022 we will have the best in live entertainment, shopping, food and drink, livestock, and much more.

The Royal Cornwall Show has been running for more than 200 years. The very first event took place in September 1793 and consisted of a ploughing match near the Red Lion Inn in Truro.

For three days each year the dedicated show ground at Wadebridge is transformed into a living town, bustling with life, energy, agriculture, entertainment and trade. It is a significant event on the Cornish calendar with around 130,000 people attending.

Apart from the livestock judging, there is the famous flower tent decked out with wonderful displays from individuals and local nurseries. The main ring offers a full three days of entertainment featuring different headline acts each year, plus show jumping and a fast and furious inter-hunt relay. There is also a full programme of entertainment and demonstrations in the countryside area, alongside Cornish heritage and Cornish wrestling. You’ll find busy marquees dedicated to goats and rare breeds, cage birds and poultry, bees and rabbits, there’s a major dog show, a traditional steam fair, the Cornwall Festival of Dance, forestry and if that’s not enough then there’s the motor fair, agricultural machinery, crafts, health and beauty … in fact, something for all the family.

Helston Flora Day

In top hats and tails, bright-colored gowns, and traditional white dresses, the people of Helston will dance the furry dance through the streets once more after a two-year break due to the pandemic.

Helston, the Cornish market town, where for hundreds of years, the townsfolk have celebrated and enjoyed the wonderful tradition that is FLORA DAY.

This ancient festival is usually held on May 8th , unless that date falls on a Sunday or Monday, in which case the previous Saturday is taken. It is a Spring festival to celebrate the end of winter and mark the arrival of the new vitality and fertility with the trees and flowers bursting into life. The houses and shops of the town are decorated with greenery and floral arrangements to express the spirit of renewal.

Dancing begins at 7am when the early morning dance takes to the streets. This is the longest dance of the day and follows a route roughly outlining the extremities of “the old town”. At 8.30am the Mummers’ play known as the Hal-An-Tow starts at St Johns Bridge and is then performed at several more venues around the town. Watch St George and St Michael slay the Dragon and the Devil, cheered on by a crowd dressed in Lincoln green and Elizabethan robes.

The children of the town dance at 9.40am. Over 1,000 take part all dressed in white with the boys wearing their school ties and the girls wearing head dresses in their school colours. This dance starts at the bottom of Wendron Street.

At midday, there’s the principal dance. This is The Ancient Furry Dance and was, in the past, reserved for the gentry of Helston and the surrounding district.
